The ITSERR consortium is composed of five esteemed institutions: the National Research Council (CNR), the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE), the University of Napoli L’Orientale (UNIOR), the University of Palermo (UNIPA), and the University of Torino (UNITO). These partners bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the project, with areas of focus including Artificial Intelligence, Cultural Heritage, Text Analysis, Industrial Design, and Information Technologies. Together, they form a strong team dedicated to advancing the research infrastructure for Religious Studies and driving innovation in the field.

  • National Research Council (CNR): CNR is Italy’s national research agency, and is responsible for coordinating, supporting, and promoting scientific and technological research in Italy. It is made up of 11 Institutes and is headquartered in Rome.
  • University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE): UNIMORE is a public research university located in Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. It was founded in 1175 and is one of the oldest universities in Italy. UNIMORE has a strong focus on engineering and science, and is home to a number of research centers and institutes.
  • Università di Napoli L’Orientale (UNIOR): UNIOR is a public research university located in Naples, Italy. It was founded in 1732 and is the oldest university in southern Italy. UNIOR has a strong focus on the humanities and social sciences, and is home to a number of research centers and institutes.

The Partners within ITSERR

The National Research Council (CNR) is a leading institution in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Research Infrastructures (RI) for the Humanities. CNR’s Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence for Media and the Humanities has expertise in the main areas of AI relevant to the ITSERR project, such as semantic technologies, human language processing, and vision and multimedia information processing. The Laboratory has also played a leading role in the development of RI for the Humanities through European projects such as ARIADNE, ARIADNEplus, e-RIHS PP, and PARTHENOS, and will bring these competencies to bear on the needs of the religious studies community in the ITSERR project.


The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) is a public university with state-of-the-art facilities and internationally-sponsored research activities. It has expertise in a range of fields relevant to the ITSERR project, including digital humanities, information and communication technologies, and cultural heritage.


Università di Napoli L’Orientale (UNIOR) has extensive experience in studying the ancient world, with a depth and breadth of research that is unusual in Italy. Its multi and transdisciplinary research themes have given it proven expertise in cataloging and using archaeological and cultural heritage. UNIOR also has a robust training program in archaeology. In relation to the ITSERR project, UNIOR brings expertise in the documentation, study, visualization, and fruition of cultural heritage, as well as in text analysis and machine learning.


University of Palermo (UNIPA) has expertise in the documentation, study, visualization, and fruition of cultural heritage, as well as in text analysis and machine learning, industrial design, and the study of religions. UNIPA’s operational unit has experience in the management and coordination of national and international research projects and in the organization of scientific events.


Università degli Studi di Torino (UNITO) is a leading institution in the field of Digital Humanities, with expertise in the development of digital tools and methodologies for the study of cultural heritage and the humanities. It also has a long tradition of research in the study of religions, including the history of Christianity and the history of Islam in Europe. UNITO brings expertise in the development of digital tools for the study of cultural heritage, the analysis and interpretation of textual and non-textual sources, and the study of religions to the ITSERR project.
